Optimization of Silk Fibroin Processing Conditions for Electrospinning in Biomedical Applications

Silk fibroin, a naturally derived protein obtained from silkworm cocoons, is a promising biomaterial for medical devices due to its strength and biocompatibility. However, silk fibroin solutions often gel prematurely during processing, thus preventing their use in electrospinning and photocrosslinking for biomedical applications. This research aims to optimize degumming and dialysis conditions to prevent gelation and produce stable silk fibroin solutions suitable for electrospinning. By refining these processing parameters, the study will support the fabrication of biocompatible, non-metallic load-bearing implants, such as bone screws, advancing safer and more sustainable materials for regenerative medicine.
