Development of the SmartPad System for Energy Expenditure Detection
Energy Expenditure (EE) is the energy organisms utilize to carry out their cognitive and physical actions. A mismatch between EE, energy storage, or energy intake can lead to a variety of diseases, and the purpose of this research is to develop an automatic, non-intrusive, continuous, and reliable system (the SmartPad System) to monitor an individual’s EE under free-living conditions. The SmartPad’s preliminary data results have an averaged square regression coefficient of 0.9 when comparing the SmartPad’s EE measurements to a reference instrument’s EE measurements. A study room has been built, and the SmartPad is currently undergoing testing in that room.
