Development of the SmartPad System for Energy Expenditure Detection

Energy Expenditure (EE) is the energy organisms utilize to carry out their cognitive and physical actions. A mismatch between EE, energy storage, or energy intake can lead to a variety of diseases, and the purpose of this research is to develop a noninvasive medical device, the SmartPad, to monitor an individual’s EE under free-living conditions. The SmartPad has an accuracy of 90% when used to take measurements in a 20 minute time interval. If FDA approved, it will be the first portable and contact free medical device that can measure EE, which would revolutionize clinical methods for weight loss.
