Development of the SmartPad System for Energy Expenditure Detection
Energy Expenditure (EE) is the energy organisms utilize to carry out their cognitive and physical actions. A mismatch between EE, energy storage, or energy intake can lead to a variety of diseases, and the purpose of this research is to develop a noninvasive medical device, the SmartPad, to monitor an individual’s EE under free-living conditions. The SmartPad has an accuracy of 90% when used to take measurements in a 20 minute time interval. If FDA approved, it will be the first portable and contact free medical device that can measure EE, which would revolutionize clinical methods for weight loss.

Sponsored project | Fall 2020
Shaun Victor was awarded an Ahmad Family Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative Fund sponsorship for his Fall 2020 FURI project. Jalal U. and Syeda F. Ahmad and their children — Jaheen N., Raisa N. and Nafisah N., all of whom attended the Fulton Schools — established a fund to give back and support undergraduate students in their pursuit of knowledge and the advancement of research. Their endowment, which funds a materials science, mechanical, biomedical or electrical engineering student, was created to help more students have the life-changing experience of conducting research through FURI.
