Developing a Model of Intracranial Pressure Dynamics: a Two-Compartment Viscoelastic Approach
Intracranial pressure (ICP) regulation is crucial for neurological health, yet existing models often fail to accurately capture the biomechanical properties of brain tissue. The study develops a two-compartment computational model incorporating viscoelastic properties to simulate ICP variations in response to pulsatile inputs, such as cardiac and respiratory influences. The model applies a lumped parameter approach, integrating compliance, resistance, and pressure-dependent characteristics. By analyzing the deformation and pressure waveform propagation within the intracranial and extracranial compartments, data is interpreted as a more physiologically accurate representation of ICP dynamics. This improves clinical diagnostics and interventions for conditions affecting cerebrospinal fluid regulation and intracranial compliance.
