Extended Electromagnetic Modeling of Planar Inductors and Transformers

Planar magnetic components – inductors and transformers – exhibit significant parasitic capacitance effects when power electronic converters operate at high switching frequencies, making accurate modeling essential. This project extends an existing electromagnetic transmission line model for single-turn-per-layer planar magnetics to the more practical and complex case of multiple-turns-per-layer configurations. The model’s predictions will be validated through two complementary approaches: experimental impedance measurements using a precision impedance analyzer on fabricated PCB winding configurations, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulations in ANSYS HFSS. Iterative comparison between simulation, experiment, and theory will refine the model toward a peer-reviewed publication.
