Handheld IR Spectrometer

This project focuses on using the technology and performance of multi-million dollar, telescope-based, IR spectrometers used on flagship NASA exploration missions around the solar system. The researcher is using this information to create an earthbound counterpart that is capable of performing the same science for a fraction of the cost. This project can be accomplished by utilizing the technology NASA pioneered, applying lessons learned from designed operations, and using cheaper non-space rated hardware to build an instrument with a comparable radiometric performance that any field scientist can bring with them to immediately obtain the molecular components of samples on location.
