Phosphorus Accumulation in the Gilbert Riparian Preserve Aquifer Recharge Ponds

Sustainability icon, disabled. A green leaf.

The objective of this project was to quantify the phosphorus accumulation in the aquifer recharge infiltration ponds at the Gilbert Riparian Preserve and determine if those levels are cause for concern. These ponds are recharged with treated wastewater effluent from the City of Gilbert. Surface water and soil samples were taken from around the central pond at the facility and were tested for phosphorus along with incoming effluent. Chlorophyll tests were also run on the water samples to determine the role of pond organisms in processing phosphorus. Results were then analyzed to help direct future management practices at this facility.
