Kinetics of Dynamic Damage Growth in Metals from Characterization and Simulations of Shock Loading Experiments

Security icon, disabled. A blue padlock, locked.

Understanding the mechanisms for damage nucleation and growth is key to developing reliable models to estimate and predict the performance of armor and defense systems. Simulations of spherical and polyhedral voids will be performed using finite element models in ABAQUS to study the interaction between these voids and shock waves using models for material response developed specifically for this application. These models will be compared to experimental data. The current working hypothesis is that the interaction between voids is strongly affected by the directionality in elastic and plastic properties resulting from material anisotropy.
