Event Camera Simulators: Survey

Data icon, disabled. Four grey bars arranged like a vertical bar chart.

Event cameras are bio-inspired sensors that capture changes in pixel intensity asynchronously, offering advantages over traditional frame-based cameras. Unlike RGB cameras that record images at fixed intervals, event cameras detect and record brightness changes per pixel independently. Event camera simulators are created to mimic the real event cameras because of the high cost of physical event cameras and limited availability of natural event stream data. This research demonstrates that no matter how advanced these simulators become, they cannot fully replicate the characteristics of real event cameras. The findings impact researchers using synthetic event data for applications such as object detection, tracking, and motion analysis.
