Advancing Wireless Network Efficiency with a Hierarchical Beam Search Algorithm for RIS-Enabled mmWave Systems

Energy icon, disabled. An orange lightning bolt.

In mmWave-based wireless networks, signal blockages and inefficient communication arise due to the high frequency and short wavelength of mmWaves. To address this, a new energy-efficient Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) prototype with 160 elements is proposed, which improves signal directivity and beamforming by predicting and scanning the user’s next location. This solution reduces energy consumption and search time, enabling faster and more reliable communication for advanced wireless systems like 5G.
