Aperiodic Surface-Based Structures for Additive Manufacturing

The motivation of this research project is to develop a method to design aperiodic surface-based structures for additive manufacturing. Once the designs are created their behavior will be studied using compression testing. First, a program will be written to enable the 3D geometry files to be tested, then the structures will be 3D printed and tested under compression to compare the structure’s behavior with existing periodic surface geometries. These structures are found in nature, including in trabecular (spongy) bone and they show promise in multiple applications such as bone implants or for heat exchangers among others.
