Effects of Lithium Carbonate on Lithium Lanthanum Zirconium Oxide Ionic Conductivity and the Adhesion Properties

Lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (LLZO) is a solid-state battery electrolyte that will provide an excellent comparison to its competitor, lithium-ion batteries, which use liquid electrolytes. In this research, various forms of LLZO along with other solid-state battery electrolyte materials will be used to study ionic conductivity and adhesion properties. These parameters are important to observe within SSEs as they contribute to their energy efficiency. However, lithium carbonate is an undesirable by-product of creating LLZO samples, which reduces ionic conductivity and performance. The presence of lithium carbonate will be a useful variable to control as it will provide insight into how lithium carbonate affects the adhesive and conductive properties.
