Microelectronics and Microplastics: Showcasing Environmental Breakdown Rates on Microelectronics
Microelectronics are a growing multi-billion-dollar industry, becoming a staple of everyday life with automobiles, cell phones, and everyday appliances. There is a need to determine what happens once these microelectronics are disposed of in their product form. This research aims to showcase how materials in microelectronics will break down over time once disposed of in landfills or different environments. These microelectronic components will be aged by manipulating UV (ultraviolet), hydrolysis, and various temperature conditions. Ultimately, this project will identify how polymers used in the microchip industry produce micro- and nanoplastics, further informing the “end-of-life” assessment of these products.
