Cooling Performance Evaluation for Performance Apparel in Hot Outdoor Conditions
Arizona workers and athletes commonly face extreme heat conditions when outside during the hot season. Existing thermal manikin research has exclusively focused on using laboratory environments to simulate thermal loads on the body. By conducting outdoor experiments with ASU’s ANDI manikin, this research aims to introduce a novel approach to thermal performance testing of textiles. This research also developed and tested a partially open wind-enclosure for the manikin that eliminates random wind gusts and provides a stable and repeatable flow conditions outside. The results of these tests will provide unique outdoor performance data for common athletic clothing and also be used to assess the accuracy of laboratory testing.
