Cavitation Nucleation and Bubble Dynamics in Agarose Soft-gels Concentrations of .3% .75% and 1.1%: Image Analysis

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) from head impact is a critical global public health issue affecting soldiers and contact sports athletes. Recent studies suggest that cavitation can indicate TBI. This research investigates cavitation nucleation and bubble dynamics in agarose soft-gels with concentrations of 0.3%, 0.75%, and 1.1%, which simulates brain tissue. Diametric data collected through image analysis on linear acceleration of the samples was used to determine the characteristics of cavitation in agarose gel. The acceleration range studied is 50g to 250g, with concussions typically occurring at 85-90g. Results could improve TBI prevention and treatment strategies by deepening understanding of its mechanisms.
