Monitoring Upright Posture in Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease: Foundations for a System to Provide Real-Time Feedback

Stooped posture is one of the main characteristic features in Parkinson’s Disease (PD). While the severity of stooped posture (SP) varies from person to person, research has shown that the progression of SP can lead to falls and other debilitating accidents. This project aims at developing a real-time feedback system to provide auditory cues to individuals with PD to straighten their posture. The system is being evaluated by investigating appropriate locations for placement of sensors as well as developing signal processing algorithms that will provide estimates of uprightness.
