Incorporating Sleep Biology into AI: Enhancing Learning in Artificial Neural Networks

This research integrates sleep biology insights into deep-learning systems to enhance continual learning and knowledge generalization in Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). By studying multi-phasic sleep patterns in honeybees, both in vivo and through biophysical models, the project aims to uncover principles of memory consolidation. These insights are applied to develop novel machine-learning algorithms, addressing issues like rapid forgetting and inefficiency in ANNs.
