Metal Consolidation through Converging Acoustic Sources

Current powder-based metal additive manufacturing techniques are inefficient due to support material costs due to high thermal gradients and low recyclability of powders. This project explores the feasibility of utilizing multiple acoustic energy sources focused on a single point to bond metal powders and sheets. The repeated low-amplitude shearing motion between oxide-free metals at the target point is theorized to facilitate diffusion, effectively consolidating the powders or bonding the sheets. The validation of this method will be used to develop supportless CMUT-based pixelated array printers and milling-free sheet metal 2.5D manufacturing systems.
