CFD Platooning Efficiency Analysis
The goal of this project is to determine the ideal following distance for platooning heavy duty vehicles. Through the use ANSYS computer-aided engineering (CAE)/computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, it is possible to optimize the efficient following distance for platooning vehicles by analyzing the inlet air speeds and airflow density at the grill of the following vehicle. Utilizing detailed airflow maps, the researcher can compare the amount of air a platooning vehicle receives to the amount of unobstructed air that the lead truck receives. Research began to yield results as a greater understanding of the ANSYS program was achieved.
