Assessing Pathways for Green Hydrogen Production: a Comparative Study of Electrolysis and Electricity Techniques

While renewable energy sources like photovoltaics are cheaper than fossil fuels, the high cost of storage to address energy fluctuations limits large-scale deployment. Green hydrogen energy has demonstrated the technical and economic potential to bridge the gap between renewable energy production and long-term energy storage. For widespread adoption, the estimated green hydrogen generation cost per kilogram should decrease to around $3. Using MATLAB, this study evaluates the costs of green hydrogen production from various electrolysis approaches and energy system integration. The assessment quantifies green hydrogen production costs under current techniques and economic levels and enables easy cost estimations under future price predictions.
