Phase Analysis of Conversion and Surface Reactions in LLZO Using Rapid Open-Air Plasma Synthesis

Solid-state electrolytes are next-generation battery materials that improve energy density, safety, and device lifetime. This work investigates plasma based synthesis of garnet-based lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (LLZO) from a rapid pyrochlore-to-garnet phase conversion, using X-ray Diffraction (XRD) to analyze phase composition under varying conditions. Open-air plasma treatment promotes faster LLZO formation and reduces processing temperatures compared to conventional furnace methods, making it a promising approach. However, impurity formation, low density, and incomplete conversion remain challenges. This study aims to identify, understand, and minimize these impurities while optimizing processing conditions to improve phase purity and maximize LLZO conversion.
