Lithium-Ion & Sodium-Ion Battery Performance at High Temperatures

This research investigates how extreme heat affects the ability of commercial lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries to operate. Through testing at elevated temperatures of 40°C, sodium-ion batteries exhibit greater thermal stability than lithium-ion batteries. Although Lithium-ion batteries deliver higher power initially, they have proven to be inferior to sodium-ion batteries in desert-like conditions. Future work will examine second-life performance of used batteries and will also evaluate fresh batteries under real outdoor conditions.
