Experimentally Validated DEM Simulations for Conduction Based Heat Transfer in Rotary Drums Filled with Monodispersed Particles at Slow Rotational Speed

Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations validated by experiments are being carried out to understand and quantify the heat transfer by conduction in rotary drums filled with mono-dispersed particles ranging from 0.5 mm to 4 mm at slow rotational speeds (below 10 RPM). The focus is on the heat transfer between the drum wall and particles in contact, and between the particles. The heat transfer coefficient and thermal time constant from experiments and simulations will demonstrate the effects of particle size, fill level and rotational speed on heat transfer in a rotary drum.
