Using Digital Image Correlation to Map and Quantify Localized Strain During Tensile Testing of an Electrospun Fibrous Scaffold

Following the mechanical characterization of polycaprolactone (PCL) fibrous scaffolds, this research seeks to measure and model the deformation experienced by these scaffolds during tensile testing. Aligned and unaligned scaffolds will be speckle patterned and stretched in tension while being imaged. Digital image correlation (DIC) will be performed, and the images will be analyzed using MATLAB. This will enable assessment and visualization of the strain experienced at any point on the scaffold during tension between 1-10% strain. This research enhances the understanding of the mechanical properties of electrospun scaffolds and their ability to serve as tissue-engineered scaffolds for connective tissue repair.
