Understanding Particle-induced Mixing in Particle-laden Turbulent Flows

Sustainability icon, disabled. A green leaf.

This research investigates mixing in particle-laden flows using particle-resolved Direct Numerical Simulations (PR-DNS). The focus is on understanding particle-fluid interface interactions, specifically how mixing depends on the Particle Reynolds number (Rep) and density ratio (𝜌p/𝜌f). The study examines the impact of particle flux on effective mass diffusivity across a stable interface between two liquid layers. While ongoing experiments measure concentration changes, they do not capture velocity fields around particles. PR-DNS will replicate the experimental setup, providing detailed flow field data to enhance understanding of the system’s dynamics and the role of particle-induced mixing.
