The Impact of Ambient Temperatures on Power System Transmission and Distribution

Sustainability icon, disabled. A green leaf.

The motivation behind this research is to identify a relationship between ambient temperatures and power system efficiency, specifically within transmission and distribution (T&D) elements, to suggest methods to create a more resilient system. To achieve this, Ansys, a high-level modeling software, is utilized to conduct a coupled analysis between electromagnetic induction and ambient thermal stress. With this information, data can be synthesized to determine how much impedance reduces the power output of the system. Determining a relationship is critical to understanding how specific elements in T&D function and how infrastructure can be revised to become more resilient.
