Sensor Efficacy in Measuring Bone Depth for Neurosurgical Applications
This project examines the efficacy of lumbar vertebral bone depth sensors for relevant surgical uses. This project attempts to categorize this by comparing multiple sensor types (ultrasound, resistance, and force) on different models including a 3D-printed spine and an anatomically-similar porcine cadaver. The project goal is to provide a blueprint to integrate sensors into surgical instruments. Bone-depth detection can assist in decreasing procedure risk, such as durotomies during laminectomies, and promote surgical assurance with unexpected cases of patient bone degradation. Future work will determine the best application of each sensor and the quality of bone to best mimic clinical practices.
