Melt Pool Dynamic Impact on Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF)

Energy icon, disabled. An orange lightning bolt.

Laser powder bed fusion, an additive manufacturing process, utilizes a high-power laser to selectively melt and fuse metal powder in successive layers. Process conditions can be optimized through melt pool dynamic analysis to assist manufacturers in producing metal products. This research aims to improve defect formation and inconsistency in part performance, mitigating process instability and broadening LPBF applications. Through the variable adjustment of laser wattages, scanning velocities, and melt pool overlap spacing, the product quality from LPBF processes can be maximized, ensuring improved mechanical properties, reduced defects, and greater process efficiency.
