Design and Testing of 3D Printed Multimaterial Structures for Energy Absorption

Health icon, disabled. A red heart with a cardiac rhythm running through it.

The objective of this study was to design, manufacture and test multi-material 3D printed cellular structures under compression, to evaluate their suitability as energy absorbers. The role of wall thickness and aperiodicity was also evaluated. By combining both stiff and soft materials into one structure, the amount of energy absorbed was increased when compared to the two component structures compressed independently.
