Analyzing the Morphological Shifts of Breast Cancer Cells under Varying Stromal Conditions Using a Microfluidic Technology

Cancer progression does not solely depend on the cancer cell acting autonomously, but the surrounding environment plays a prominent role in cell behavior and disease progression. To achieve a deeper understanding of the impact that diverse stromal components have on the morphological changes of cancer cells, an engineered model of the tumor microenvironment will be established. Upon establishing a controlled tumor microenvironment, a quantitative assessment of morphological features of the cancer cells such as shape descriptors, and protrusiveness will be conducted utilizing an imaging based technique. The anticipated results are expected to contribute insight into the tumor microenvironment and the understanding of breast cancer invasive capacity in response to varying stromal components.
