5-DOF Simulations for Parametric Assessment of Missile Engagement Envelope

Security icon, disabled. A blue padlock, locked.

Surface-to-air missiles engage airborne targets. Upon initial detection, the missile is launched and guided toward the target within a lethal radius around the target, in which its warhead can ensure target defeat. Based on the target range, angle, speed, and direction when the missile is launched, these define an engagement envelope within which the missile can defeat the target. Five degree-of-freedom (5-DOF) trajectory simulations can be used to determine these engagement limits. This study conducted a parametric assessment of missile engagement limits to understand how such simulations can be used to determine the engagement limits for a typical surface-to-air missile.
