Addressing Interfacial Degradation at Hard Carbon Anodes of Sodium-Ion Batteries

Energy icon, disabled. An orange lightning bolt.

This project studies how material structure and physical properties of hard carbon affect battery performance when used as an anode in sodium ion batteries. Hard carbon has challenges due to rapid degradation at low temperatures and electrochemical compatibility issues. This approach intends to discover whether size, shape or porosity specifically govern battery degradation through direct measurements of hard carbon powders and correlating this to device stability. Finding the origins of this degradation phenomena will ultimately enhance battery performance at a wider temperature range, allowing the transition towards low-cost and sustainable sodium ion batteries.
