Comparing Motor Screening Tools Between Dementia Subtypes in Older Adults

This research seeks to develop a framework for identifying which motor behaviors are most affected by different dementia subtypes. By directly comparing gait, balance, grip strength, and fine motor skills using statistical approaches, we will establish foundational latent motor-based constructs that may differentiate Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia with Lewy bodies. Thus, this study will lay the groundwork for identifying specific motor functions that could serve as early, accessible biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases. These findings have the potential to advance rapid, cost-effective screening tools for use in primary care to provide more targeted referrals to dementia specialists.
